Mac users have Quicksilver. Linux users have GNOME Do. Windows now has its own application launcher that can compete with the rest: Launchy. Although it has been around for a while, Launchy is finally starting to gain momentum. New releases are coming out more often and the user community is growing.
Although not as sophisticated as Quicksilver, and lacking many of the plugins of GNOME Do, Launchy excels at the one task it was really made for - launching applications. The app automatically indexes the programs on your computer at a user-defined interval. Then, with a press of the hotkey (Alt-Space by default), Launchy pops up waiting to start up the program of your choice.
